My name is Michael Ditto. People seem to think my last name is interesting. I suppose it is.
"What an interesting name. What does it mean? What is your ethnic background? Are you (Italian/English/German/...)?"
I wish I knew.
"What an unusual name. I'll bet you hear a lot of jokes about it."
Kindof. The most common one is "I'll bet you hear a lot of jokes about it." And since that isn't actually very funny, I feel that I am missing out on all these jokes to which I am somehow entitled but never actually get to hear.
So... I am trying to learn about the Ditto name and where it and my ancestors came from.
I am just starting this, so I eagerly welcome any data that anyone has to offer.
There are various places in the U.S. with "Ditto" in their names.
The major Ditto clans I have found in genealogical databases seem to be concentrated in Maryland, Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, Texas, and Kansas.
The Dittos that I am closely related to are all from the San Diego area and are living around there or around Bellingham, WA. My grandfather was born in Altoona, Kansas. I ran across mention on the net of some other Dittos in Kansas.
A different Michael Ditto with whom I exchanged email a while back says he has relatives in Colorado and Tennesee.
Much of the following information is from Pam Stroud, who is also doing Ditto research: There were some Dittos in Maryland around 1700.
Pam is decended from some Dittos who lived in Madison County, Alabama in the early 1800's. There is a place there on the Tennessee River called "Ditto Landing".
Some of the Alabama Dittos migrated to Arlington, TX in the mid 1800's. There were quite a few Dittos around that part of TX between then and now.
The Ditto name itself might be Alsatian, perhaps originally spelled "DeToe".
